HAPPY VALLEY, OREGON WEATHER: JULY 2022

TEMPERATURES

July 2022 averaged quite a bit above Normal in the area for the three official Portland stations, with Maximum Temperatures having greater departures (+3.2° to +3.8°) than Minimum Temperatures (+2.1° to +3.3°), providing overall Mean Temperature departures ranging from +2.6° to +3.5°.

The first 10 days of July were rather cool, with this Happy Valley location having Max/Min/Mean Averages of 74.9°/56.1°/65.5°. The first reading this month of ≥80° occurred the following day on the 11th when it actually soared to 91.8° but this heat didn’t last long as Maximums fell back to 87.8° on the 12th then 70s to mid 80s through the 24th. It was at this point that persistent heat enveloped the area. From the 25th-31st, each day reached ≥90°, averaging 92.5° during this 7-day period, and peaking at 95.2° on the 26th for the highest reading of the month and warmest Temperature since 99.6° on 8/12/2021. For the month, a total of 15 days reached temperatures of ≥80°, with 8 of those days attaining ≥90°. One day managed to remain below 70° when the 2nd of the month could only muster a pleasant 68.4° under partly cloudy skies. An aspect of the end-of-month heat was the unusually high Heat Indices/Relative Humidity, the Maximum Heat Index reaching 108° in the afternoon of the 29th, with 4 other days hitting >100°, noting that this location’s weather station is directly adjacent to woods, which helps suppress Maximum Temperatures compared to more urban areas while increasing the humidity.

Minimum Temperatures varied by just 16.1° during the month, ranging from 50.5° (4th) to 66.6° (30th) (the spread between Highest and Lowest Maximum Temperatures of this month was 26.8°, from 68.4° to 95.2°). Only 8 days failed to fall to ≤60°, with all but one of those days occurring after the 24th. Splitting the month into sections in order to show just how warm the end of the month was, the Average Max./Min./Mean Temperatures were thus: 1st-24th, 78.5°/56.0°/67.2°; 25th-31st, 92.5°/64.8°/78.6°. The Maximum Diurnal range was 34.6° (91.8°/57.2°) on the 11th, the least being 10.9° (72.2°/61.1°) on the cloudy, damp 6th.
