TEMPERATURES
January 2021’s area Average Temperatures were from 2° to 3.5° above Normal, with the greater departures being with Average Minimum Temperatures. Except for a brief warm-up from the 12th-14th and a cool-down from the 25th-27th, Maximum Temperatures didn’t vary much at all the entire month with just 5 days managing to surpass the 50° mark and only 4 other days falling to <45° (consecutive from the 24th-27th), indicative of a damp month. The month’s extreme Maximum hit 58.2° on the 12th and the lowest Maximum being 38.8° on the 24th.
Minimum Temperatures showed a wider variance, ranging from a very mild 48° on the very rainy 12th, then dipping to 30.4° on the 23rd, one of just 3 days to reach the freezing mark this month.
Splitting the month in two, the Max/Min/Mean Temperatures were thus:
1st-15th: 50.9°/42.3°/46.6°;
16th-31st: 46.3°/37.7°/42.0°.
The greatest diurnal range was 16.6° on the 3rd (60.4°/43.8°), the least was only 1.8° on the 13th (38.3°/36.5°). The greatest diurnal range was only 15.2° (47.6°/32.4°) on the 9th, the least just 3.3° (40.1°/36.8°) on the 24th.
PRECIPITATION
It was a persistently wet month as 24 days recorded measurable precipitation, totaling 8.90″, which is 123% of the January Normal of 7.23″ for this location, a +1.67″ departure. The longest stretch with no measurable rain? Just 2 days (18th-19th & 22nd-23rd). The highest daily amount was on the 12th when 2.25″ was recorded. Though the precipitation was persistent, by far the majority of the heavier amounts fell in the first half: 7.33″ from the 1st-15th, 1.57″ from the 16th-31st (82% vs. 18%). The season’s first snowflakes were seen on the 26th as rain turned to snow in the afternoon, totaling 1.6″ by early evening.
