TEMPERATURES

Overall, April Temperatures averaged slightly above the Normal. The month began quite cool as the Average Minimum Temperature through the first 13 days of the month was just below 40°, with 9 of the first 13 days reaching ≤40°. However, these would be the last days to fall this low as more Spring-like conditions moved into the area. The first and only Minimum Temperature to remain ≥50° didn’t occur until April 29th – even January had 2 such days.

The Maximum Temperatures were also chilly through the first week, averaging just 54.4° as two of these days were the coolest of the month, with 47.7° on both the 1st and 3rd.  Maximums quickly warmed on the 8th, with 5 days reaching ≥70° from the 8th-17th. It cooled again back into the 50s & 60s from the 18th-27th before finishing the month in the upper 60s to low 70s over the final 3 days.

Splitting the month in half, these were the Average Max/Min/Mean Temperatures: 1st-15th, 61.7°/40.1°/50.9°; 16th-30th, 65.8°/46.9°/56.4°.  

The Maximum Diurnal Range was 33.6° (72.0°/38.4°) on the 8th, the least was just 9.3° (56.3°/47.0°) on the rainy 22nd.

PRECIPITATION

It was a much drier than normal April, especially the earlier part of the month. Through the first 17 days only 0.68″ fell. The first 5 days saw measurable rain, including hail to pea-size on the 2nd, then an extended, beautiful dry spell occurred from the 6th through the 17th, quite unusual for this time of year. Steadier rain finally returned on the 18th, with measurable rain falling every day but one from the 22nd-29th, totaling 0.98″ and accounting for 54% of the month’s total precipitation during this 8-day period. Overall, a total of 1.80″ fell, only 44% of the normal of 4.07″ for this location. Measurable precipitation fell on 13 days this month. The highest calendar-day amount was the 0.39″ measured on the 25th.

Wind averaged 0.3 MPH and the Maximum Gust reached 12 MPH (2nd & 16th).
