TEMPERATURES

January 2020 began with mild temperatures as the first 2 days reached just over 50° then to 60.4° on the 3rd, quickly cooling by the 4th. By the 8th of the month temperatures had returned to near-normal values, even dropping to freezing on the 14th & 15th, the coldest two readings of the month. After reaching 32.8° on the 17th, only 2 more Minimum Temperatures fell below 40° the remainder of the month. The middle of the month also brought the coolest Maximum Temperatures, hovering in the upper 30s to low 40s from the 13th-17th then mostly staying 50° or above the remainder of the month. Splitting January into sections, the Max/Min/Mean Temperatures were thus: 1st-18th 46.3°/38.4°/42.3°; 19th-31st 52.5°/44.7°/48.6°. Due to the nearly continuous cloud cover, the diurnal range did not vary much, the greatest only being 16.6° on the 3rd (60.4°/43.8°), the least just 1.8° on the 13th (38.3°/36.5°).

PRECIPITATION

It was a persistently wet month as nearly every day recorded measurable precipitation, totaling 9.75″. This was the highest monthly amount since March 2017 when 10.76″ was measured. This month’s total was 35% above the normal of 7.23″, a departure of +2.52″. No single day received a seasonally large amount so no consequential flooding occurred except the typical street and field flooding during the heaviest rains. The highest daily amount was on the 23rd when 0.88″ accumulated. The first 19 days had measurable precipitation, totaling 5.40″; the 10-day period 21st-30th saw measurable rain each day with a sum of 4.35″. The Maximum Rain Rate during the month was 1.99″/Hr (5th).

This January’s first snowflakes were seen on the 13th (T), the first measurable snow fell on the 14th (0.3″), and the maximum daily snowfall occurred on the 17th (1.1″), the latter also being the maximum depth measured, though it had completely melted by observation time.

There were even 3 brief small hail events over a 20-minute period in the mid-afternoon on the 5th.

Relative Humidity peaked at 100% (18th & 30th), and reached a Minimum of 32% (3rd).

Dew Point went from 57° (31st) to 28° (15th).

Wind averaged 0.5 MPH and the Maximum Gust reached 19 MPH from SE (15th).
