TEMPERATURES

August Maximum Temperatures averaged close to normal but they were off-set by Minimum Temperatures that averaged about 2° above normal. There were no extended periods of hot or cool weather. Three days reached ≥90°, one near the beginning of the month, the other two near the end of the month, culminating in a monthly Maximum extreme of 95.2° on the 28th, the second-warmest reading of the year, exceeded only by the 96.4° on June 12th. These 3 days of ≥90° also doubled the yearly total to 6 (including the 2 in June and 1 in July). The coolest Maximum Temperature was the 68.5° on the 8th during a cloudy, damp day, 1 of 4 to remain ≤70°. As usual, Minimum Temperatures did not vary as much as Maxima, ranging from a low of 52.2° (26th) to 65.0° just two days later (28th) during a late-month brief warm spell when there were 4 consecutive days with Minima ≥60°, half of the month’s such readings (the other 4 occurring between the 2nd and 8th of August). Splitting the month in two, the Max/Min/Mean Temperatures were quite complementary: 1st-15th – 80.7°/58.7°/69.7°, 16th-31st – 79.4°/56.8°/68.1°. The Maximum Diurnal Range was 32.9° on the 4th (91.8°/58.9°) and the Minimum was the 7.9° on the 8th (68.5°/60.6°).

This month’s rainfall total of 0.64″ was slightly below Normal for this location, the Normal being 0.82″ (according to Oregon State University’s PRISM Climate Mapping System). There were just 4 periods of rain, spread out through the month. The only multi-day period was 8th-11th when a total of 0.26″ fell; the maximum calendar-day amount of 0.21″ occurred on the 21st. There were 7 days with measurable rain, all but 2 were <0.10″. The longest period without measurable rain was the 9-day period 12th-20th.
