HAPPY VALLEY, OREGON WEATHER: JANUARY 2019
TEMPERATURES
It was an up-and-down month temperature-wise throughout, though never varying too much. Daily Maxima ranged only 15.0° during January, Daily Minima 14.9° as the monthly Mean Temperature ranged only 9.2°. Just one daily Maximum reached ≥55° (actually 54.8° on the 10th) and only one daily Maximum fell to ≤40° (39.8° on the 5th). The chilliest Minima occurred right at the beginning as the only 2 days to reach freezing were on the 1st and 2nd. When looking at the first and second halves of the month, temperatures averaged almost exactly the same – Max/Min/Mean 1st-15th: 47.4°/39.1°/43.3° vs. 16th-31st: 48.6°/38.5°/43.5°. The greatest diurnal temperature range was 20.8° (31st), the least only 4.2° (15th). Though January of 2019 seemed (and was) quite mild, it had a Mean Temperature 2.2° cooler than January of 2018 (43.4° vs. 45.5°).
PRECIPITATION
It was a below-normal month and would have been far-below normal had it not been for the multi-day heavy rain that fell mid-month. The heaviest rain of the month spanned the 19th-20th when 1.45″ accumulated during a 15-hour period, 32% of the monthly total of 4.54″ (a 5-day total of 2.65″ occurred 16th-20th, 58% of the monthly total). The amount of 1.20″ on the 19th was the only daily amount ≥1.00″ this month. Through the first 15 days only 1.34″ were recorded. Unusual dry periods that occurred in the normally rainy months of October and November also occurred this January – no rain fell from the 11th-15th nor on the final 8 days of this month. Also, not a flake of snow fell this month and still hasn’t, yet, this entire season.

MISCELLANEOUS
For the month, there were 9 clear, 8 partly cloudy, and 14 cloudy days. Fog was observed on 15 days, with 5 of these being heavy (<1/4 mile visibility). With the lack of cold weather, some area plants are breaking ground, budding, or even blooming.
