Happy Valley, Oregon, Weather: July 2018
TEMPERATURES
Overall, July started off fairly close to normal through the first 11 days, with some pretty chilly mornings, mostly in the low-to-mid 50s, even dropping to 47.1° on the 3rd for the month’s lowest temperature. The heat quickly took over on the 12th, bringing 6 consecutive days with Maximums ≥90°. Fortunately, due to the cloudless skies and dry air, Minimums dropped into the 50s to low 60s each day bringing respite from the daytime heat. A few cool days followed (daytime 70s, nighttime upper 40s) but then even more extended heat enveloped the area when 10-consecutive days reached ≥90°, peaking at 97.9° on the 29th. All-in-all, 16 days recorded Max. Temps. ≥90°. The Portland Airport (PDX) set its all-time record with 15 such days (period-of-record back to Nov. 1940), also setting the long-term historical record when including official downtown data back to 1871.
Comparing two specific periods in this month, the following Max/Min/Mean Temperatures were observed here in Happy Valley: 1st-11th, 79.3°/54.7°/67.0°; 22nd-31st, 93.4°/58.1°/75.8°. The Heat Index peaked at 104° on the 29th, the only such day to reach ≥100°. The monthly diurnal range was nearly 30°; the maximum daily range was 40.1° (22nd), the minimum was 10.9° (9th).
PRECIPITATION
A nearly rainless month occurred as only a single day of rain was observed; this 0.03” amount is also the total for 44-consecutive days (starting with June 18th) to end this month. Though this July was very dry, it did exceed July 2017 when only a Trace fell the entire month.

MISCELLANEOUS
Not a single day of fog was observed this month. July recorded 26 Clear, 3 Partly Cloudy, and only 2 Cloudy days; The average wind speed was only 0.2 MPH and the Maximum Gust reached 10 MPH (5th, 6th, and 11th). There were 6 consecutive days where the Relative Humidity fell below 30% (22nd-27th, during the month’s second heat wave).
It’s interesting to note that none of this month’s extreme temperatures (High Max., Low Max., Low Min., High Min., High Mean, nor Low Mean) occurred on the same day; that’s quite a rare occurrence.
