HAPPY VALLEY, OREGON WEATHER: OCTOBER 2018
TEMPERATURES
This October was dominated by mild maximum temperatures in the middle of the month during an amazingly dry period. From the 10th-24th, skies were clear nearly every day, allowing for maximum sunshine as the mean maximum temperatures averaged 66.7°, even warmer when counting the shorter period 15th-18th when it averaged 72.1°. Minimum temperatures were rather mild also but not for as long as the maxima were due to the clear, dry nights causing temperatures to drop well into the 40s on most nights, averaging 47.1° from the 10th-24th, and even milder when narrowing to the 4-day period 15th-18th when it averaged 51.2°.
PRECIPITATION
The first four days were dry, then the most extended period of decent rain since early June fell from October 5th-9th, totaling 1.39″. It seemed that, after a very dry summer, our rainy season just might be kicking in. However, the water works completed shut off with an unusual 14-day period of no measurable rain from the 11th-24th. Then, just as we were getting used to unencumbered outdoor activity, the final 7 days recorded measurable rain, totaling 3.18″, with thunder and pea-size hail accompanying the rain on the 28th. There was even an EF-0 tornado in north Portland, about 10 miles northwest of this station.
