Happy Valley, Oregon, Weather: March 2018
TEMPERATURES
For the second consecutive late-winter month, the second half was cooler than the first half, the opposite of what is Normal. Only 2 days this month managed to reach ≥65°, with 65.0° on the 11th and a monthly Maximum of 70.3° on the 12th, the latter being the warmest temperature since 83.9° on Sept. 28, 2017, nearly 6 months ago, hinting at Spring finally kicking into gear. However, the coolest Maximum Temperatures didn’t occur until the 22nd-24th with readings of 47.9°, 44.2°, and 42.8°, making it feel more like mid-winter than late March. Splitting the month in half, the following Max/Min/Mean Temperatures were observed: 1st-16th 55.6°/39.3°/47.5°; 17th-31st 54.1°/39.3°/46.7°. There were 19 days with Minimum Temperatures ≤40°, with the month’s coolest reading being just above freezing at 32.6° on the 6th.
PRECIPITATION
It was a rather dry beginning to the month as only 0.47″ was recorded through the first 12 days and 1.51″ through the first 20 days. More typical precipitation began on the 21st and coincided with colder temperatures filtering into the area. Snowflakes were reported from the 22nd-24th, with small hail falling for several minutes during the evening of the 22nd, immediately followed by wet snowflakes. An accumulation of 0.1″ occurred in the early-morning hours of the 24th (the total may have been higher but that was what was measured by later morning). A total of 1.97″ of liquid precipitation fell 21st-27th, with the final 4 days of the month remaining dry.
