HAPPY VALLEY, OREGON WEATHER: MAY 2019

TEMPERATURES

May 2019 averaged several degrees above normal, mostly due to much-above-normal temperatures through the first 13 days; all but two days were in the 70s and 80s during this period. In contrast, 13 days remained ≤70° from the 14th-31st. Splitting the month in two, the following Max/Min/Mean Temperatures were recorded: 1st-13th 76.3°/46.4°/61.4°; 14th-31st 67.0°/50.7°/58.9°, the former period revealing clear, sunny skies and the larger diurnal range of temperatures vs. the latter cloudier, rainier conditions in the second period. The month’s coolest Maximum Temperature was also later in the month as it only reached 54.6° on the 25th, one of two consecutive days where it remained ≤60° (and 32.3° below the month’s Maximum Temperature of 86.9° on the 10th).

PRECIPITATION

It was an unusually dry start to the month of May with not a drop of rain falling through the first 13 days (16 days when reaching back to April). Oddly, the next 13 days all recorded measurable rain, followed by the month’s final 5 days with no measurable rain. With such a dry beginning, it appeared that the month would end well-below normal as there are usually fewer chances of precipitation as the month progresses. However, the month ended up being almost exactly normal as the 3.18″ measured is just shy of the 3.26″ 30-year-average (1981-2010) for this location, according to Oregon State University’s PRISM model found at: http://www.prism.oregonstate.edu.

The average wind speed was just 0.2 MPH and the Maximum Gust reached 12 MPH (9th & 19th). Only 4 days managed to reach a peak gust of ≥10 MPH. Only a single day with thunder was observed (26th) but it’s possible another day earlier in the month had thunder but was not observed.
