HAPPY VALLEY, OREGON WEATHER: JUNE 2019

TEMPERATURES

As happened in May 2019, this month was also topsy-turvy as the first half was warmer than the second half, mostly due to brief record heat. There were 5 consecutive days ≥80° (9th-13th), including 2 days ≥90° (11th & 12th); no Maxima were >80° the remainder of the month until the final two days. The 70.8° Minimum Temperature on the 12th is now the warmest since this station was established on 5/29/2019 and first ever of ≥70°. As usual, overall Minimum Temperatures were not as variable, especially after the 13th. From the 1st-13th, the extreme Minima ranged from 45.6° (4th) to the above mentioned 70.8° (12th); from the 14th-30th, the Minima ranged from 47.5° (24th) to 53.5° (23rd), only a 6.0° variation. Splitting the month in half, the Max/Min/Mean Temperatures were thus: 1st-15th – 77.2°/52.2°/64.7°; 16th-30th – 72.8°/51.1°/61.9°. The date with the largest diurnal range (34.2°) was the 9th (80.3°/46.1°), the least was on the 5th with just 9.0° (65.3°/56.3°).

PRECIPITATION

It was a typically dry June through the first 25 days as only 4 days recorded measurable rain, 3 of which were ≤0.10″, the fourth day bringing 0.65″ on the 7th. However, a late-season Low Pressure system out in the Pacific to our northwest came close enough to provide conditions ripe for thunderstorms. The Cascades were the first to receive enough uplift, then storms began to develop in southern Oregon, quickly moving northward through the rest of the Willamette Valley. An intense cell moved directly over this station’s location providing thunder, wind, and hail (up to 3/8″ diameter) on the 26th of the month; this brought intense rain, maxing out at a rate of 9.76″/Hour during the period when 0.12″ was recorded in 1 minute, with 0.81″ in 18 minutes. The total for this same calendar day reached 1.18″, by far the most this location has recorded on a June day since being established in May 2014. The following day, another 0.52″ fell, providing the greatest monthly June total of 2.55″, superseding the previous maximum of 2.18″ in 2014.
