It was a much drier than normal October in 2019 as the statewide average in Oregon was just 1.60″, only 65% of the 1895-2019 Normal of 2.46″.  However, the persistent chilly weather, especially in the northern half of the state, was the more important story this month.  Overall, it was the 4th coldest October in the last 125 years with a Mean Temperature of 43.2°, just 1.0° short of the coldest of all time which occurred exactly 100 years prior…

An unusual early-Autumn weather pattern that brought incredible late-September snows to the northwestern U.S. (over 40″ in parts of Montana and 14″ at Oregon’s Timberline Ski Area on Mt. With a minimum temperature of 59° this morning at the Portland Airport (PDX), Portland’s third-longest streak with minimum temperatures of ≥60° came to an end at 17 consecutive days. This came close to the all-time record of 19 days ending on 8/1/1998, also recorded at PDX. UPDATE: 8/21/2018 At the 2:00 P.M. PDT observation, the Portland Airport had reached 91°, tying the all-time record for Number of Days ≥90° in a calendar year at 29 days (also in 2015). It would’ve occurred yesterday but the wildfire smoke was so thick (visibility was down to 3 to 6 miles on the hourly observations through the daylight hours) that it held temperatures well-below the predicted highs (83° maximum vs predicted 90° or so).
