It was a very dry and record-warm August in Happy Valley. TEMPERATURES: August started out very hot with two consecutive days exceeding 100° (2nd & 3rd), with the month’s maximum on the 2nd hitting 101.3°. Though quite hot for this area, these maximum temperatures were likely somewhat suppressed due to rather thick wildfire smoke blowing down from British Columbia and northern Washington. August started off with record heat on the 2nd and 3rd (103° and 105°, respectively) and, though no more Maximum Temperature records were set the rest of the month, the Mean Temperature was the warmest ever recorded for the Portland Airport (period of record back to 1940). The overall Average Maximum was 6.0° above normal, the second-highest August reading ever. Now that the great U.S. Solar Eclipse has passed through, it was interesting to see the temperature change during the event. Under fully clear skies, the eclipse began around 9:05 A.M. in Happy Valley, Oregon. The temperature on my Davis Vantage Pro2 (VP2) station stopped its typical morning rise and began leveling off at around 9:15 A.M., peaked at 66.5°F just before 10:00 A.M., then began dropping. TEMPERATURES: Though there were many pleasant days early on, Maximum Temperatures certainly warmed in the month’s second half. The coolest period occurred from 8th-16th when it never even reached 70°, with the month’s low Max. Temp. of 58.1° observed on the 12th.
