HAPPY VALLEY, OREGON WEATHER: JULY 2021

TEMPERATURES

This was one of the warmest Julys on record, though there wasn’t any extreme heat, only consistently mild temperatures. The Maximum Temperature didn’t even reach 90° until the 28th (90.9°), with just one other day reaching that level when it hit 95.1° the following day, also the day with the Maximum Heat Index of 96°. The 30th of the month was predicted to reach near 100° but cloud cover suppressed the temperature and it only reached 85.7°. On the other end of Maximum Temperatures, 20 days remained ≤85° and 9 of those days were ≤80°, with the coolest day being the 1st when it only reached 70.8°. As usual, Minimum Temperatures didn’t range as much as the Maximum Temperatures, the month’s highest Minimum waiting until the final day with 68.7° and the coolest being the 50.5° on the 22nd. There were just 5 days to remain >60°, the 1st, 2nd, & 29th-31st, meaning there was a very pleasant streak of 26 days when the Minimums fell to <60° from the 3rd-28th.

The Maximum Diurnal Range was 34.3° on the 9th (87.3°/53.0°) and the Minimum was the 8.9° on the 1st (70.8°/61.9°). Splitting the month in two, the Max/Min/Mean Temperatures were thus: 1st-16th – 82.0°/56.3°/69.2°, 17th-31st – 84.8°/57.4°/71.1°, with the heat near the end of the month creating the difference.

PRECIPITATION

The only precipitation that fell the entire month was a Trace amount during a brief period of drizzle on the morning of the 3rd and some drops falling in the afternoon of the 30th. The new Normal amount (according to the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)) in July for this location is 0.67″ per the 30-year period 1991-2020. Though having no measurable precipitation in a summer month is not unheard of here, it came on the heels of a record-dry spring, now with only 6.39″ for the 155-day period Feb. 27th to July 31st, 2021.
