HAPPY VALLEY, OREGON WEATHER: JUNE 2021
TEMPERATURES
June Temperatures were, simply, unprecedented. Never before in the Pacific Northwest’s official weather records have temperatures vaulted to the extremes as they did in late June, 2021. Over the 3-day period 26th-28th, all-time records for any day of the year were established on each of those successive days for most Willamette Valley locations as Temperatures reached well-over 100° each of these 3 days, maxing out at 107° at this Happy Valley location but soaring to 116° at the Portland International Airport (PDX) and 117° at the Salem Airport (SLE – McNary). The month of June would have averaged far above the previous records of 2015 but the first half of the month was rather cool, helping offset the extremes later in this month. At this Happy Valley location, the Average Maximum Temperature was actually slightly below June 2015 (80.9° vs. 81.2°) but the Average Minimum Temperature was quite a bit higher (56.0° vs. 54.5°), resulting in a Mean Temperature of 68.4°, 0.5° warmer than 2015’s 67.9°.
Prior to 2021 here in Happy Valley (back to 2014), only one Minimum Temperature had ever remained ≥70° for a calendar day (70.8° on June 19, 2019) but we managed to do that twice this month with 72.1° and 72.2° on the 27th & 28th, the latter date requiring a bit of explanation. The 72.2° on the 28th occurred just prior to the end of the observation day (midnight) after an onshore wind shift brought cooler air in from the Pacific; the morning Minimum Temperature had only fallen to 80.9° before rising. In fact, during the early morning hours the lowest the temperature dropped to was 86.5° from 0128-0536 hours, even rising to 89.3° from 0401-0417 hours as a persistent dry, hot east wind out of the Columbia River Gorge kept the heat entrenched overnight before falling a bit after sunrise. Quite a remarkable event.
Breaking June 2021 into halves, the Max/Min/Mean Temperatures were thus: 1st-15th: 72.7°/52.8°/62.7°; 16th-30th: 89.1°/59.2°/74.1°. The coolest period occurred 4th-15th with 9 of these 12 days having Maximum Temperatures remain ≤70°, averaging 68.7°/51.2°/59.9°. The greatest Diurnal Range was 36.4° on the 1st (94.4°/58.0°), the least was just 6.9° on the 13th, the wettest day of the month.
PRECIPITATION
All of this month’s measurable rain occurred within the 10-day period June 5th-14th, totaling 1.48″ (64% of the Normal June amount of 2.32”), with rain falling on 7 calendar days. The wettest period occurred when 0.71″ fell from 1820 hours on the 12th to 0700 hours on the 13th. The Maximum Rain Rate for the month was 2.26″/hour on the 14th at 1206 hours.

…RECORD BREAKING HOT WEATHER…
An unusually warm air mass across the Pacific Northwest brought hot temperatures to much of the region. More records will likely fall over the next few days as expect little change in the weather pattern. With the current forecast, it is possible that some stations that just exceeded their all-time highest temperatures may do this again today or possibly Monday. Here are the records that were broken on Saturday, with the period of record for each station listed at the bottom.

ALL TIME HOTTEST TEMPERATURES ON RECORD SUNDAY JUNE 27TH 2021…
A record smashing heatwave has overtaken the Pacific Northwest this weekend. Several sites squeaked past their all time highest temperature on record on Saturday with many others breaking their warmest June day on record. However, all of these sites heated up even more on Sunday June 27th 2021 and either tied or broke their all time warmest temperature on record for any month of the year. This includes a number of sites such as downtown Portland, Salem and Eugene where data goes back to the late 1800s. Given these were the warmest temperatures observed at any point during the year since records began, they are by default the new records for June and more specifically June 27th. There is a chance that some of these sites will make a second or third run at their all time record high temperature on Monday and surpass these Sunday numbers. * Given the Portland Airport, Troutdale and Vancouver set their all time hottest temperature on record on Saturday, their record warm temperature prior to Saturday June 26th is also included in the statistics below…
