TEMPERATURES
Following the Portland area’s all-time warmest October, November 2022 began very chilly, one of the coolest starts ever, and the cool days continued throughout the month. November didn’t have any extremely cold days, mainly just no warm days. For the 3 official Portland stations, the highest temperatures for the month remained in the 50s, except just touching 60° at the Portland International Airport (PDX). For the longer-term Downtown Portland weather station (currently at KGW-TV), it was the 10th coldest November since 1871 (that’s 156 years of data!); for the shorter-term station at the Portland National Weather Forecast Office (WFO, in the Park Rose neighborhood), it was the coldest November since record-keeping began in 1996. Though it was only the 15th coldest November at PDX, it was the coldest since 2000.
Here in Happy Valley, only 4 days had Maximum Temperatures of >50° during this month, the highest only reaching 56.0° on the 5th. All other Maximums ranged from 41.0° to 49.9° as temperatures didn’t waver much throughout the month. Minimum Temperatures were also fairly consistent through November, ranging from a high of 43.8° to a low of 30.3°, with 27 of the 30 days reaching ≤40°, including 3 days falling to ≤32°, the season’s first freeze occurring on the 9th. Additionally, 4 other days made it down to 33°.
Following the abnormally warm October 2022, the November Average Maximum Temperature was 20.1° cooler than October 2022 (46.6° vs. 66.7°); Average Minimum Temperature was 14.5° cooler (36.2° vs. 50.7°), providing a Mean Temperature difference of 17.5° (41.2° vs. 58.7°). Splitting the month in two, the Max/Min/Mean Temperatures for November show the parity: 1st-15th: 47.4°/37.0°/42.2°; 16th-30th: 45.7°/35.3°/40.5°. The Maximum Diurnal range was 15.9° (46.4°/30.5°) on the 20th, the least being just 4.8° (45.1°/40.3°) on the rainy 27th. To further show the extremes between October and November 2022, the October Maximum Temperature here in Happy Valley was 83.0° compared to the 56.0° in November. PRECIPITATION
It was a wet beginning this November, with measurable rain every day from the 1st-7th, totaling 4.73″, followed by a very dry period. (PDX’s longest November stretch with 14 consecutive days with no measurable precipitation, though here is Happy Valley we received 0.04″ in the afternoon of the 11th so didn’t have this lengthy streak). A day of precipitation occurred on the 22nd, followed by 2 more dry days before regular rains closed out the month. Even with the extended dry period, the total of 7.63″ was slightly above the average of 7.36″ for this location due to several significant events, the departure from Normal being 103.7%. The Maximum Calendar-Day rainfall came on the 4th as an Atmospheric River streamed into the area, bringing over 2 inches, which also brought the mildest temperatures of the month such that even the Cascades had mostly rain/freezing rain from this event.

Sky Cover Days: 10 Clear, 5 Partly Cloudy, and 15 Cloudy.
Barometric Pressure: Average Maximum/Minimum readings were 30.24″/30.02″, with the Highest Daily Value of 30.55” on the 15th & 16th, the Lowest Daily Reading of 29.46” on the 6th.
Relative Humidity: Maximum/Minimum Averages were 90%/7%, having a Daily Maximum of 98% on the 3rd, 7th, 8th & 29th; Daily Minimum of 37% on the 18th.
Dew Point: Averages were a Maximum/Minimum of 41°/32°, with a Daily Maximum of 55° on the 4th & 5th, Daily Minimum of 19° on the 18th.
Wind: The Daily Average Speed was 2.1 MPH from the N, and the highest Daily Average was 5.4 MPH from the N on the 19TH; the Daily Average Gust was 15.8 MPH and the Highest Gust reached 30 MPH from the SW on the 4th.
