HAPPY VALLEY, OREGON WEATHER: JUNE 2022
TEMPERATURES
June 2022 Mean Temperatures were just a bit above Normal in the area, with Average Maxima having Normal to slightly negative departures and Average Minimum departures of +1.0° to +1.8° at the three official Portland stations (downtown, PDX airport, and weather forecast office).
The first two days of the month began relatively warm with Maximum Temperatures in the upper 70s but it quickly cooled to the 60s under wet skies for the next 4 days until rebounding to the low 70s for 2 more days. That is when a very chilly air mass for June began, bringing with it very intense rain for this time of year (see the Precipitation write-up, below). From the 9th-20th, every day remained ≤70°, with 4 of these days remaining in the 50s, with the 56.2° on the 12th being the lowest Max. Temp. of the month. The final 10 days of the month were a completely different story as temperatures stayed above 70°, with the first 80-degree reading since last September as it topped out at 81.1° on the 24th, peaking with 2 days in the low 90s on the 26th & 27th before cooling to the 70s the final 3 days of June.
Minimum Temperatures were quite consistent through the first 22 days, varying less than 11 degrees day-to-day. The month’s coldest Min. waited until the 23rd when it bottomed out at 45.9°. The month’s warmest Min. Temp. occurred just 3 days later when it only dropped to 68.2°, occurring the same day as this June’s Max. Temp. of 91.9°. The next day recorded a Min. of 64.4° and these would be the only 2 mornings not to fall below 60° as the month’s final 3 days made it down to the low-to-mid 50s.
PRECIPITATION
Following the very wet months of April and May, 2022, June continued this pattern as 5.27″ of rain fell, 227% of the Normal of 2.32″. The first wet period began on the morning of the 3rd, becoming heavy in the early evening, continuing off and on until the morning of the 6th, and totaling 1.06″ for this period. This was to be outdone as very intense rain for this time of year began in earnest in the evening of the 9th, continuing into the early morning hours of the 11th. In a day and a half, more than 3 inches fell with a Maximum Rain Rate of 1.97″/hour at 19:47 hours on the 9th, more typical of early winter than early summer here. Less wet weather continued through the 15th, followed by one more major system moving through from the morning of the 17th to the morning of the 19th, dropping nearly another inch. That is when the spigot just shut off and not another drop of rain fell over the month’s final 11 days.
