TEMPERATURES
January 2022’s area Average Temperatures were barely below Normal, with Average Maximums slightly above Normal, Average Minimums a bit below Normal. The month began quite cold, continuing the December chill. The 1st of January brought the coldest temperatures of the entire month, with a Maximum of just 33.8°, Minimum of 22.1°. This was followed by highs in the 40s to low 50s through the 10th, then spiked to the month’s Maximum of 60.3° on the 12th before falling back to the 40s to low 50s the remainder of the month, with the exception of 56.4° on the 20th.
After sub-freezing Minimum Temperatures on the 1st and 2nd, they remained above freezing through the 23rd, the highest Minimum being the 45.4° on the 13th. Minimums remained below 40° from the 21st-31st, with a single sub-freezing day the 24th then for the final time on the 29th. There would have been more sub-freezing Minimums during this period had it not been for the persistent northeast winds out of the Columbia River Gorge, keeping the air stirred at this station’s elevation while cold air was able to drain into the surrounding valleys not subject to the wind.
Splitting the month in two, the Max/Min/Mean Temperatures were similar and were thus:
– 1st-15th 48.7°/37.0°/42.9°
– 16th-31st 47.0°/35.6°/41.3°.
The greatest diurnal range was 23.8° on the 2nd (50.8°/26.9°), the least was only 3.9° on the 13th (49.3°/45.4°).
PRECIPITATION
The month began as a typically wet January, totaling 4.72″ through the first 13 days. However, unusually dry weather dominated after that, with no precipitation from the 14th-17th, 3 days of measurable rain 18th-20th, then a welcomed extended dry period from the 21st-29th that included 8 consecutive clear days. The month ended with 0.21″ on the 30th-31st. The monthly total of 5.99″ was 84.7% of the January Normal of 7.07″ for this location, a -1.43″ departure. The 1st-13th contained 79.1% of the month’s total, the 14th-31st the other 20.9%. In fact, just the 5-day period 3rd-7th with 4.22″ totaled to 70.5% of the month’s total. After December 2021 ended with 6 consecutive days of measurable snowfall, not a single January day had even a flake of the white stuff.

Barometric Pressure:
Average Maximum/Minimum readings were 30.31″/30.10″, with the Highest Daily Value of 30.65” on the 21st, the Lowest Daily Reading of 29.32” on the 7th.
Relative Humidity:
Maximum/Minimum Averages were 93%/73%, having a Daily Maximum of 99% on the 5th, 6th, 19th-21st; Daily Minimum of just 51% on the 28th & 29th.
Dew Point:
Averages were a Maximum/Minimum of 42°/33°, with a Daily Maximum of 54° on the 20th, Daily Minimum of 17° on the 1st.
Wind:
The Daily Average Speed was 1.8 MPH and the highest Daily Average was 6.7 MPH on the 27th; the Daily Average Gust was 14.7 MPH and the Highest Gust reached 32 MPH from the SE on the 6th.
